In 1954, and still fresh with his mind full of images of Matisse he had collected during the honeymoon trip to Paris the pervious year, Derek explores slip decorating techniques, cutting simple abstract stencils, based loosely on the leaf, he applies them to the clay. The lead glaze, although primitive, bringing out a pureness and clarity of these designs. All the Hillesden work being dipped in the same red-lead glaze, and fired on stilts to earthenware.
