The Early Pots
The Early Pots

Together they purchased an old taxi, which was used to collect their materials from the Fulham pottery, London, a return journey of some one hundred and fifty miles. The red earthenware clay was transported to Fulham in railway trucks and was often impregnated with coal. Some materials came in two and a quarter hundred weight sacks, and the consistency of most materials lacked quality-control to say the least. A fact that few Potters today could appreciate.

Building on what basics John could teach him, Derek soon developed a feel for pottery, producing a range of small and medium-sized press moulded dishes(John Clarke refers to them as ditch moulded).

Small Triangular dish.
12 x 2 cm
Earthenware moulded with white slip and decorated with iron or manganese (one with sgraffito) under a Red lead glaze. 1952- 56

Ref: 53
