1959 not only sees the birth of their son, Josse, but probably just as eagerly anticipated by Derek, ’The New American Painting' exhibition, which opened at the Tate Gallery, just two weeks later. Ruth nursing a newborn, sadly can’t make it up to town, but Derek couldn’t stop himself. He does, however bring back a copy of the catalogue.
Although the freedom of Pollock remains paramount, it is the compositions of Motherwell and Kline that inspire him and will ultimately stay with him, and influence in his work.
A collection of Derek and Ruth’s reference books from this period, including the exhibition catalogue from ’The New American Painting' .
