With Duff House, came the commitment of a mortgage, and before the summer was out, Ruth was to announce the welcome news that she was pregnant with their first child. Derek now needed the security of a regular income, a part-time job, at least, something to help them through the next few years, while he established his studio, built a kiln, and payed the bills.
He was fortunate, quickly locating two teaching posts in the area. The first, giving lessons in pottery at Worthing College of Art, which entailed a fair amount of throwing, and to which he had to admit he was still a novice himself. It was only thanks to the efforts of Micheal Miles, a fellow tutor at the time, and experienced thrower, that kept him on top of the work. Much of the first term, he only just survived, by staying one step ahead of his students. Sadly when I was a student there, twenty years later, Micheal Miles had been promoted out of his expertise and into admin. Check as this may be in 1959/60
The second post, is at Chichester School of Art, where he meets other art tutors, Jenny Howard and Bill Lane, who in turn introduced him to their social group. A wonderful world of artists and architects, musicians and historians, comics and intellects.
